Halim Suliman (aka Dennis H. Lowery) Poet/Teacher/Mentor

October 12, 1951 ~ July 3, 2006

Halim graduated from Barringer High School ii 1968. He was a member of the band and the track and wrestling teams. He received his Associate’s Degree from Essex County College where he served as editor of the school newspaper. His professional career included Newark Emergency Services for Families, Newark Coalition for Neighborhoods and the Public Information Office of the Newark Board of Education. He was a beloved instructor at Arts High School where he coached their award-winning speech team. He had a passion for encouraging young talent. He is best characterized by his gentle manner and quick wit. His genius, creativity and love for jazz are exemplified in the political satire of his poetic style and delivery. His cultural and political endeavors include: Founder The Newark Artists’ Collective, Co-Founder, People United for Better Schools, Co-Founder of BlueArk (with Amiri Baraka), Video Archivist for Kimako’s Blues People, a performing member of the Solid Rock Players (founded by Celeste A. Bateman), Wordquestra with Felipe Luciano, and Manager, The Baby Legends Jazz Ensemble. A renowned wordsmith, Halim performed extensively and traveled to Germany, Paris and elsewhere. His poetry can be heard on his acclaimed CD, Word Rhythm. His legacy continues.
