Breya “Blkbrry Molassez” Knight

Breya “Blkbrry Molassez” Knight (October 2,1986 – August 14, 2016) poet, was a Newark, NJ “Queen” filled with various qualities and talents — art, music and literature. She performed with the newly formed Five Women Performance Ensemble in 2015 and 2016 and was dubbed the “Queen of Verse” by group founder, Celeste Bateman. She was a fearless vessel created from the mighty generation of women that raised her — influenced by the freedom-fighting of Amiri Baraka, soothing inspirations of Maya Angelou, the teachings of her Weequahic High School (Newark, NJ) English teacher Rob Hylton and the music of phenomenal Newark women Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah, Whitney Houston, Rah Digga, Faith Evans and Sarah Vaughan. She added a mixture of gospel and hip-hop to her poetry. Breya was a self-published author of three books and had recently released her first poetic CD project City Limits. She was a free artistic spirit, always ready and willing to share her gifts. She called herself the “Poetic Diabetic,” as she met the challenges of this disease that severely affects the African American community. Breya succumbed to the disease months before her 30th birthday.
