NJPAC's Kwanzaa "Tribute to the Elders"
On Friday, December 15, 2006, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) presented a "Tribute to the Elders" as part of their annual Kwanzaa celebration honoring outstanding community elders. The honorees were longtime Newark activists Elma T. Bateman and Richard Whitten, Sr.
Hosted by renowned choreographer and founder of the African American Dance Ensemble, Baba Chuck Davis with C. Katunge Mimy, the event, which was started by former NJPAC Vice President for Arts Education, Philip Thomas, honored the late Halim Suliman, a poet and teacher at Newarkâs Arts High School. Several of Arts High's students were on hand to pay tribute to their beloved teacher.
